“Deep Time” (2026) Orchestra [15′]

Commissioned by Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra

Deep Time is inspired by Marcia Bjornerud’s book Reading the Rocks and the idea that stones are living witnesses to Earth’s 4.6-billion-year history. The piece begins with Earth’s hum and stabilizing carbon cycles, moving through the emergence of RNA-based life, the oxygen revolution, collapse, and renewal, before a resurgence of sound. In the final moments, musicians exchange instruments for rocks, letting the orchestra become a resonant, rhythmic geology—deep time made audible and tangible.
